HOW IT WORKS for patio projects

Outdoor Spaces Built to Last

A patio is more than a surface. It's an extension of your living space, and it needs to work the same way a well-built room does. Level, properly drained, and built to stay that way.

The same groundwork principles that apply to driveways apply here. Correct excavation, the right sub-base for the surface type, accurate falls to drain water away from the house. Get those wrong and the problems show quickly: flagstones that rock, surfaces that pool water, edges that drop. Get them right and the patio performs exactly as installed for years to come.

We install patios in three main surfaces:

RESIN PATIOS: Smooth, low-maintenance, and available in a wide range of colours and aggregates. Resin creates a seamless finish that works well in contemporary outdoor spaces and handles heavy foot traffic without cracking or loosening.

BLOCK PAVING PATIOS: Design flexibility, pattern, colour, border detail, finish. Block paving creates a classic look that ages well and can be repaired easily if individual blocks are ever damaged.

NATURAL STONE PATIOS: Limestone, sandstone, porcelain, granite. Natural stone creates an outdoor space with genuine character. It requires careful laying and the right bed depth to ensure flags stay level and don't rock. We'll advise on the stone types that work best for your property's soil conditions and drainage.

Groundwork & Base Preparation

We excavate to the correct depth for the chosen surface, lay and compact the sub-base, and ensure drainage falls are accurate. This stage determines whether the patio stays level for years to come.

Surface Installation & Handover

The chosen surface is laid to the correct specification, edges finished, and the site cleared. We don't sign off a job until the surface is level, the drainage is right, and the finish is what was agreed.

maTERIALS & FINISHES

Choosing the Right Material for Your Patio

Every material has its own character. Here's a brief overview of what we work with and when each makes sense.

Brick house patio with large gray stone paving, raised planters, and sliding glass doors.

Block Paving

The most versatile option. A wide range of colours, sizes, and patterns, from clean contemporary designs to more traditional styles that suit older properties. Block paving is robust, repairable, and holds its appearance well over time when it's correctly jointed. A popular choice for larger patios where consistent, formal lines are important.

Resin Bound

A modern finish that works beautifully in contemporary garden designs. Smooth, seamless, and available in a wide range of aggregate colours. Resin is fully permeable, low maintenance, and doesn't support weed growth. It works well alongside resin driveways for a unified look across the front and rear of the property.

Natural Stone

For homeowners who want a more premium, characterful finish, Indian sandstone, porcelain, or similar, we can discuss and advise on options.

Natural stone requires a different installation approach and James and the team will assess suitability during the site visit, presenting the best options based on your project.

FAQs

 Patio Questions Answered

  • Do I need planning permission for a patio?

For most residential patios, no. Planning permission is generally not required for patios at ground level. We'll advise at the quoting stage for any specific circumstances.

  • What's the difference between resin, block paving, and natural stone for a patio?

Resin is the most low-maintenance, seamless finish, no weeding, wide colour choice. Block paving offers design flexibility and is easy to repair. Natural stone has character and genuine longevity but requires careful installation and appropriate stone selection for your soil and drainage conditions. We'll talk through the options at the site visit.

  • How long does patio installation take?

Depends on size and surface. A standard residential patio typically takes two to four days. Natural stone may take longer due to cutting and bedding requirements. We'll give you a clear timeline at the quoting stage.

  • How do I stop weeds growing between patio slabs?

Good jointing material is the first line of defence. We use quality jointing compounds that significantly reduce weed growth. We'll advise on ongoing maintenance at handover.

  • What causes patio flags to rock or settle?

Rocking or settling flags are almost always a base preparation problem, insufficient depth, inadequate bedding mix, or inaccurate falls. When the base is prepared correctly and flags are bedded properly, settling should not happen. Our 10-Year Guarantee covers this.
