Block Paving Driveways in Bicester & Thame: A Practical Choice That Lasts

Brick-paved driveway leading to stone row houses with hedges and a low wall.

Block paving has been used for driveways for decades, and it’s still one of the most requested options across Bicester and Thame. That’s not down to habit. It’s because when it’s installed properly, it works.

It gives you more control over how your driveway looks than almost any other surface, and it has a track record of lasting for years without losing its shape or appearance.

Like everything else in this industry though, the end result comes down to how it’s built, not just what it’s made from.

What Is Block Paving?

Block paving is made up of individual bricks laid by hand in a chosen pattern. Those blocks are set on a prepared base and then compacted into place to create a solid, interlocked surface.

Because each block is separate, it gives you flexibility in both design and long-term maintenance. You’re not dealing with one continuous surface, which makes a difference over time.

The Appeal: Flexibility in Design

One of the main reasons homeowners choose block paving is the level of control it gives you over the finished look.

You can match the driveway to the style of your property, whether that’s something more traditional or something cleaner and more modern. The choice of colour, pattern, and edging detail all play a part, and small decisions here make a noticeable difference to the final result.

Done well, it doesn’t just function as a driveway, it improves the overall appearance of the property.

A Recent Example in the Bicester Area

We recently completed a block paving driveway for a property near Bicester where the existing surface had started to sink in areas. The issue wasn’t the surface itself, it was the base underneath.

We removed the old driveway completely, excavated to the correct depth, and rebuilt the foundation in layers to make sure it was stable. Once that was in place, the new blocks were laid in a consistent pattern with defined edging to keep everything secure.

The finished driveway looked clean and level, but more importantly, it was built to stay that way.

That’s the difference most people don’t see at first.

Why the Groundwork Matters

Block paving is often judged by how it looks on day one, but the real test is how it performs over time.

If the base isn’t strong enough, the blocks will start to move. You’ll see dips forming, joints opening up, and areas that no longer sit level. Those issues aren’t caused by the blocks, they come from poor preparation underneath.

A proper installation starts with full excavation, followed by a well-compacted sub-base and accurate levels for drainage. The blocks are then laid on top of that foundation.

Get that right, and the surface stays stable for years.

How Long Does Block Paving Last?

A well-installed block paving driveway can last 20 years or more.

One of its strengths is that it wears evenly. Even with regular use, it tends to hold its structure if the groundwork has been done properly.

It’s also one of the few driveway types that can be repaired without starting again. If a section becomes damaged or stained, individual blocks can be lifted and replaced without affecting the rest of the driveway.

What About Maintenance?

Block paving does need some upkeep over time, but it’s straightforward.

The joints between the blocks can lose sand gradually, so they may need to be topped up occasionally. You might also get some weed growth in those joints if they’re left unattended.

Neither of these are major issues, but they’re worth being aware of. With basic care, the driveway continues to look tidy and well-kept.

Is Block Paving Right for Your Property?

Block paving works well if you want something that combines durability with a more tailored appearance.

It suits properties where the visual detail matters just as much as the function, and it’s a solid option if you’re planning for the long term.

As with any surface, the decision shouldn’t be made in isolation. The existing ground conditions, the size of the area, and how the driveway will be used all need to be considered before choosing the right approach.
